TRON Blockchain: How It Works

TRON is a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain designed for speed, scalability, and low-cost transactions. Founded in 2017 by Justin Sun, TRON launched its mainnet in 2018 and has since grown to over 290 million accounts. Its architecture is built around enabling fast digital asset transfers and hosting decentralized applications at scale.

Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS)

TRON uses a Delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. Instead of mining, the network relies on 27 elected Super Representatives (SRs) who take turns producing blocks every 3 seconds. TRX holders vote for their preferred Super Representatives, and votes are proportional to the TRX staked. This system enables extremely fast block times and energy-efficient operation compared to Proof-of-Work blockchains like Bitcoin. Critics note that 27 validators represents a degree of centralization, but TRON argues that the voting system provides democratic governance.

TRON Virtual Machine (TVM)

The TRON Virtual Machine is the environment in which all TRON smart contracts execute. The TVM is designed to be compatible with Ethereum's Solidity programming language, meaning developers familiar with Ethereum can deploy smart contracts on TRON with minimal code changes. The TVM supports both TRC20 and TRC10 token standards, dApp development, DeFi protocols, and NFT marketplaces. Its Turing-complete design allows for complex contract logic while maintaining efficiency.

Transaction Throughput

TRON is capable of processing up to 2,000 transactions per second (TPS), compared to Ethereum's ~15–30 TPS on its base layer. This high throughput, combined with 3-second block times, is what makes TRC20 transfers so fast and cheap. The network's capacity has proven sufficient even during periods of peak stablecoin demand, which now exceeds hundreds of billions of dollars in monthly USDT TRC20 volume.

TRON Token Standards: TRC10 vs TRC20

TRON supports two main token standards. TRC10 is a basic token standard that does not require smart contracts — it is supported natively by the blockchain and has significantly lower fees (historically up to 1,000x cheaper than TRC20 for API calls). However, TRC10 has limited functionality compared to smart contract-based tokens. TRC20 is the more powerful standard, supporting smart contract logic, DeFi integrations, and full Ethereum-like programmability. USDT and most major tokens on TRON use TRC20.
