What Is TRC20? TRON's Token Standard Explained

TRC20 is the token standard that governs how fungible tokens are created, transferred, and managed on the TRON blockchain. Every token on TRON that follows TRC20 rules can interact seamlessly with wallets, decentralized applications (dApps), and exchanges — because they all speak the same technical language.

How TRC20 Works

Every TRC20 token is essentially a smart contract deployed on the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM). The TRC20 standard defines a set of required functions including balance queries, token transfers, and spending approvals. When you send USDT TRC20, you are calling a smart contract function — not doing a simple coin transfer. This is why TRC20 transfers require both Bandwidth and Energy, while a plain TRX transfer only needs Bandwidth.

TRC20 vs ERC20

TRC20 and ERC20 share a very similar architecture — both define fungible token standards on smart contract blockchains. However, they operate on entirely separate networks and are not interchangeable. A USDT TRC20 token cannot be sent to an ERC20 address and arrive correctly. The key practical differences are speed and cost: TRC20 confirmations take about 3 seconds and cost less than $0.01, while ERC20 transactions can take minutes and cost several dollars in gas fees.

Popular TRC20 Tokens

The most prominent TRC20 token is USDT (Tether), which represents the majority of all USDT transactions globally — over 70% of USDT volume moves over the TRON network. Other notable TRC20 tokens include USDJ (TRON's native stablecoin), JST (the utility token of the JUST DeFi platform), and BTT (BitTorrent Token). Stablecoins, governance tokens, and DeFi assets all use the TRC20 standard.

TRC20 Transaction Fees

Transaction fees on the TRC20 network are paid via two resources: Bandwidth (for data storage in the transaction) and Energy (for smart contract execution). Users can earn these resources for free by freezing (staking) TRX. When resources are depleted, a small amount of TRX is burned to cover the shortfall. In practice, a standard USDT TRC20 transfer costs under $0.01, making it one of the most affordable token transfer rails in crypto.
